A man is accused of killing his grandmother and two others before committing suicide in a Southwest Side home that was set on fire Monday evening.

The sister of the man, who has not been identified, called police at about 6 p.m. to a home in the 7500 block of Dream Valley, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said.

The woman, who was not at the scene, told police her brother was turning tables over and breaking things inside the house.

Officials found a woman and a man in their 60s with gunshot wounds lying in the home’s front yard when they arrived, McManus said. The house also was found to be on fire.

After firefighters controlled the blaze, SWAT officials found the suspect and his grandmother dead inside the home, San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood said.

“You don’t often see SWAT officers wearing self-contained breathing apparatus … (or) assault weapons around a fire truck,” Hood said. “But that’s what you saw today.”

Firefighters were unable to fully contain the flames at first because the suspect had not been detained, Hood said. They were later able to put the fire out from the outside.

McManus said the three victims lived together in the home.

Officials are looking into how the fire was started.
